Dr Lindsay Murphy

Project Manager

Lindsay has joined the SoAR team to help collate its achievements and promote its further growth and improvement.

Coming from a research background

Southampton is where Lindsay’s research journey first began. She was an undergraduate student at the University of Southampton reading Biology. Her degree was interlaced with practical laboratory experiences in the USA and Australia. This stimulated her interest in basic science research.

She then moved to Glasgow University to undertake a PhD in virology. She investigated Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), a common cause of coughs and colds. While RSV infections are usually mild, they can be serious for babies and older people.

Lindsay returned to Southampton for her first role as a postdoctoral researcher. She investigated hepatitis C virus (HCV) and its impact on specific cell types in the liver.

She then relocated to Newcastle, where she had the opportunity to continue research into liver biology for a number of years. She then transferred to the study of heart development.

Moving into project management

Lindsay moved into translational research as a Patient Registry Project Manager and Curator. This was at the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre, Newcastle University.

There, she worked alongside colleagues from Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. She collaborated with many different stakeholders. These included patients, patient advocacy groups, regulatory authorities and pharmaceutical industry representatives, as well as national and international researchers and academics.

She managed patient registries for individuals with rare genetic neuromuscular disorders. She particularly focussed on registries for people with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and disorders caused by changes in their Fukutin-Related Protein (FKRP) gene.

Lindsay greatly enjoyed this role, which she did for six and a half years. She has now returned to Southampton and joined the SoAR team. She now plans to use her knowledge and experience to further improve SoAR, so we can better support our researchers.
