Prof Karl Staples

Academic Career Development Lead for NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre

A respiratory scientist with a background in immunology, Karl is a member of the Respiratory & Allergy theme within the BRC.


Supporting respiratory researchers


An experienced supervisor of both science and medical students undertaking research projects at all levels, Karl also co-leads the Allergic Airways Disease Module on the MSc in Allergy and teaches Pharmacology to students on the University Bachelor of Medicine Programmes.


Impact of Infections


Karl is an expert in respiratory immunology with a special interest in the role of lung macrophages in health and disease. His major research focus is on the impact of viral and bacterial infections on chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD.


Career


Karl began his career in respiratory research during his PhD at the National Heart and Lung Institute. He joined the University of Southampton in 2006 and was appointed to a Lectureship in 2016. He was promoted to Professor in the Faculty of Medicine in 2023. He is currently the Chair of the British Association for Lung Research.
